Material Handling Operations Safety in the Warehouse

Material handling in the warehouse requires proper procedures and safety measures to ensure accurate and trouble-free operations. Warehouse storage systems, together with all its accessories, must be handled properly and safely to avoid potential warehouse hazards.

Whether you're using equipment or lifting and carrying the materials by yourself, here are some material handling operations safety measures that workers in the warehouse must keep in mind at all times.

1. When driving forklift trucks inside the warehouse, be sure to do this safely and carefully. It is important that only authorized personnel should have an access to the forklift truck. It is essential to know that forklifts have a high center of gravity and can tip over if not driven slowly and carefully by trained, authorized operators.

2. When placing items in the forklift, arrange them properly. Materials placed improperly on the forks, or lifted or placed incorrectly, can easily slip. That's a hazard to the operator and to others in the area.

3. Forklift operators must understand their machines and follow the rules of the road. Pedestrians must be on the lookout for forklifts at all times and stay out of the way when they're in use.

4. Cranes, hoists, and derricks should be operated only by trained operators who know enough to keepfrom swinging a load over people or to remove their hands or feet from controls while a load issuspended. In addition, anyone who works in the vicinity must pay attention to crane movements to avoid accidents.

5. Never stand or work under a crane.

6. Stay away from tools with heavy or unbalanced loads that couldfall over and cause serious injuries—even fatal ones.

7. Never use ladders that are not rated for thetask, not in good condition, or not used properly, someone could take a bad fall.

These are just some safety measures that every worker in the warehouse should observe to ensure that material handling operations are performed perfectly. For more information about warehouse storage solutions, visit http://www.msshouston.com/warehouse-mezzanines/warehouse-storage-solutions.htm.

Racking System Installation Tips

Whether you are building a racking system for your home or office, here are some useful installation tips that you should keep in mind to help your run your project smoothly.

1. Before you start, take an inventory of your materials and equipment to be used. Don’t focus only on the equipment that you will be mounting right now. Instead, take into consideration any components that you may decide to add in the future, and make sure to provide space allowances for them.

2. Consult with a professional. If this is the first time that you will install racking systems, do not hesitate to get advice from a carpenter, a contractor, or an electrician.

3. Make sure that you have complete and appropriate tools on hand. It is better that you collect all the tools that you will need ahead of time, instead of getting them one by one as you need them. A good base of tools to start with should include a tape measure, a pencil, a hammer, a flashlight, both Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers, and a level.

4. Plan ahead and map things out in advance. Drawing a diagram of how your rack system will look like should be a good start.

5. Get a friend or family member involved in the project. Having another person around to help you with heavy lifting and other tasks is always a good idea.

6. Perform your racking system project in a cool, dry place. Networking and home theater components can generate a lot of heat, and it’s important for your equipment to continuously be kept cool by rack-mount fans, vented enclosure panels or ventilation units.

7. Do not forget to measure. Using the tape measure, measure appropriately and make sure that you allow enough room for your equipment before you bolt in all of the shelves.

8. Clean up. Once the installation is done and mounted in place, clean up and store away your tools. You may be able to use them on your next racking system project.

If all else fails, contact rack system manufacturers and seek for their assistance. For more information about racking systems, visit http://msshouston.com/pipe-racks.html.

Your Options for a Tie Rack

Tie racks are storage racking systems for neck ties. They keep neck ties and other accessories such as belts, scarves, and handkerchiefs neatly, wrinkle-free, and tangle-free. They are space-saving systems that provide organization to many small clothing pieces that are usually left lying around the floor in a room. Tie racks are essential to every men’s room.

Types of Tie Racks

Fixed tie racks – Fixed tie rocks are designed to be mounted on walls, doors, or cabinets. They feature a vertical or horizontal linear design that allows easy access to neck ties. They come in a wide variety of sizes, holding about 10 to 50 neck ties at ones. They are easy to install and do not require so much space.

Rotatable tie racks – Rotatable tie racks often feature a circular design. They are intended to be rotated, allowing the user to easily browse through his neck ties and providing him with easy access. Most models come with a stable base and thick, long pole that secures the rack, while others are designed to be hung from a cabinet ceiling. They come in a wide variety of sizes, holding about 10 to 30 neck ties at ones.

Revolving tie racks – Revolving tie racks are motorized racks that revolve automatically, providing easy browsing and accessing of ties. They offer better organization of neck ties than fixed and rotatable models, keeping ties neat and untangled. They can hold up to 70 neck ties and other accessories such as belts and scarves. However, they require large space and require batteries or electricity to operate.

Things to Consider when Purchasing Tie Racks

Choose a tie rack that enables you to keep a large number of neck ties neatly and tangle-free. Getting one large tie that accommodates all your neck ties rack is better than installing several small racks that hold few neck ties only. Maintenance Tips for Equipment Platforms

Equipment platforms are storage systems designed to elevate equipment and machineries to maximize space and avoid easy access from employees. Also used for maintenance purposes, these platforms are used in many types of industries and for many different applications.

Typical equipment pieces that are placed on top of platforms include boilers, water treatment equipment, pumping equipment, conveyor support, pipeline crossovers, and generators among many others. To ensure that these platforms will remain functional over a period of time and avoid immediate damage, here are some maintenance tips to keep in mind.

1. Install the equipment platform away from busy areas in the warehouse or facility. Ensure that it cannot be accessed readily by anyone, but authorized personnel only. This will avoid any accident that may happen when the equipment or the platform suddenly breaks or falls down.

2. Identify the maximum weight capacity of the equipment platform and follow it religiously. Make sure that the total weight of the equipment placed on the platform will not exceed the given weight limit.

3. Equipment platforms come in all sizes and shapes and have multiple uses. Install one that perfectly fits or is customized according to the size, shape, and weight of the equipment you are placing on it.

4. Choose an equipment platform that is made using high-grade and sturdy materials. Never sacrifice quality over a few savings on cost.

5. Regularly check and monitor usage of the platform. If you notice a damage, no matter how small, have a professional fix it right away. If you have to stop the operation of the equipment and bring it down for a while, do so. This will protect not just the equipment and the platform, but the employees in the warehouse, as well.

These are some of the ways on how you can maintain and take care of your equipment platform. Safety Tips: What to Do in Case of Mezzanine Accidents

No matter how a mezzanine manufacturer sturdily installed the storage system in your warehouse, if proper caution is not observed by workers in the facility, accidents may happen. And they have happened indeed.

Here are the things you should know in case accidents happen on or near your warehouse storage system, such as falls, trips, and stumbles.

If you are the one involved in the accident:

1. Stay calm and seek for help. If you need to shout, do so. This is to call the attention of the co-worker standing nearest you.

2. If you are conscious and know what happened, tell all the details to your co-worker or the company nurse. Identify which parts of the body are seriously affected.

3. For serious injuries, have someone call an ambulance immediately. Otherwise, determine if the wound or scratches can be treated with first aid at the office clinic.

4. Report immediately what is damaged in the storage system and what needs to be fixed or readjusted. Have someone call the mezzanine manufacturer to have the problem solved and avoid further accidents.

If a co-worker is involved in the accident:

1. Do first aid as necessary. Be sure that the company has an available first aid kit that can be used to treat minor wounds and scratches.

2. If you are not fully knowledgeable with first aid, call someone who is. Or bring the victim to the office nurse if he can be moved.

3. If victim is unconscious, check pulse and heartbeat. Call an ambulance right away or bring him to the nearest hospital.

These are just some safety tips that every worker in the warehouse needs to know, so that in cases of emergency, you will know just what to do and how to handle the situation. Why Install Custom Mezzanines Instead of Standard-Sized Systems?

Mezzanine manufacturers design and install a wide range of mezzanine storage systems at standard sizes, ideal for most industrial warehouses and facilities. However, some companies still prefer custom mezzanines over the standard-sized storage system.

A customized, pre-fabricated mezzanine does not follow the typical size of storage systems and is specially designed according to the requirements of the client or the limitations of a warehouse. When an off-the-shelf storage system is not the best solution for a company’s material handling or storage requirement, a customized one can be an invaluable resource.

Here are other important reasons why custom mezzanines are better than standard-sized storage systems.

1.       A custom mezzanine brings a perfect fit, providing maximum storage space to your facilities. Standard-sized ones may be too small, too big, or too complicated for what you need.

2.       A custom mezzanine can be tailored according to the purpose of the elevated platform in terms of materials to be used, design, and installation. Will it serve as storage for heavy items or as an additional operating room for your business?

3.       A custom mezzanine is made of the highest quality materials to guarantee that the storage system will stand safe, reliable, and strong.

4.       A custom mezzanine can be made flexible and expandable to give you the control to add the space you need. Custom, quality bolted designs make for quick and easy installation with no mess.

5.       Finally, custom solutions are built to maximize savings. You will get the exact product that you need with the exact requirements for your storage needs. Standard-sized systems may be limited in size and function.

While there is a great selection for standard, off-the-shelf storage systems to choose from, custom mezzanine solutions are ideal for unique requirements that you won’t be able to find from typical ones. High-Quality Industrial Mezzanines

Not all mezzanines are the same. While the functions may be similar, you should be able to distinguish a high-quality industrial mezzanine from low-quality ones. To ensure that what you’re getting is durable, sturdy, and high-quality that will stand the test of time, keep in mind the following factors.

Correct Dimensions

Mezzanines should not only look aesthetically pleasing in your warehouse. More importantly, they should have the right dimensions and fit perfectly into the space allotted for them. For an industrial mezzanine to be both functional and visually attractive, it should be installed in a space with a high ceiling, providing enough room for storage and movement.

Structurally Sound Edges

Just like balconies, mezzanines feature an open concept on the edges. This can be a major concern for workers having to stay and stand on it because they may feel the fear of falling off. This is why the edges have to be of the highest quality and should be able to withstand an incredible amount of stress. Make sure that the materials are sturdy and durable enough.

Visually Appealing

Aside from the function, you would want your mezzanine to look nice and in accordance to the overall theme of your room or warehouse. After all, it’s like installing an additional room to a house. Moreover, an ugly-looking mezzanine may appear to be old and dangerous. Talk to the design team to ensure that they will be able to grasp your concept of how the mezzanines should look like.

Most importantly, having a sturdy, high-quality industrial mezzanine can come from the service of professional and knowledgeable mezzanine manufacturers. MSS Houston takes pride in designing and installing quality mezzanines and other storage systems ideal for any industrial warehouse. If you high-quality is what you’re looking for, talk to the experts at http://msshouston.com/cantilever-racking-10/uncategorised/industrial-mezzanine.

Storing Rubber Tires the Right Way

Your tires are some of the most important parts of your car. When they get damaged, you may spend a lot of bucks for repair or replacement. That is why it is very important to keep your tires as good as new by exerting efforts to store them the right way. It is not just about regular cleaning; you may also need to do other ways to ensure their long-time use. Many commercial establishments, even individuals, store their spare tires using a cantilever rack to ensure quality.

The Danger of Ultraviolet Rays

The ultraviolet rays from the sun may result to degradation of your tires. In fact, it is one of the most common causes of tire damage. When storing your tires, it is best to keep them away from direct sunlight – which means you have to place them in a cool, dry place. Keeping them indoors is the best storing practice you can do for your tires.

Aside from this, it is also best to place them in a rack that will allow them to be dry at all times. As mentioned above, it may be good to have a rack, especially when you need to store a good amount of spare tires. You can opt for a customized cantilever rack for this purpose.

Storing Tire Bladders and Rubber Parts

In order to properly store tire bladders and rubber parts, store them in opaque containers. This will avoid any stain from damaging your tires. The best material for storage is the polymer shipping container as it also blocks the light from penetrating into the rubber. If you are to ship your tires, dark plastic bags or other sealed containers can be used.

The storage room also has to be at the right temperature. Ideally, you want the temperature to be maintained at 75 percent, relative at temperatures between 5 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius.

These are some of the ways of storing your rubber tires. It is not just about regular cleaning since the properties of rubber are also susceptible to damage. To know more about storing tires properly, visit http://msshouston.com/cantilever-racks.html.
